Frequently Asked Questions

Who is HypnoBirthing for?

HypnoBirthing is for all expectant mums, whether you're expecting your first baby, have given birth before or are expecting twins. It doesn't matter whether you're planning a hospital birth, a home birth or a caesarean section. The techniques can help you prepare for different birth experiences.

HypnoBirthing can also be especially valuable if you've had a difficult or traumatic birth before, or if you're feeling anxious about giving birth. My goal is to help you feel more confident, informed and prepared, whatever your birth journey may look like.

What is the best time to start a HypnoBirthing course?

You can never start too early! The more time you have to practise the breathing and relaxation techniques, the more familiar they will become. Most parents start their HypnoBirthing preparation somewhere between 20 and 35 weeks of pregnancy, but there's no perfect time. It really depends on you and your pregnancy.

I'm already 35–39 weeks pregnant. Is it too late to start?

Not necessarily! Of course, the earlier you start, the more time you have to practise. But even towards the end of your pregnancy, there are still valuable things you can learn.

Depending on your situation and my availability, we can arrange private online sessions focusing on what matters most to you. Just get in touch, and we'll see what we can do!

Will I have a completely pain-free labour and birth?

Unfortunately, nobody can promise you a completely pain-free birth. Every woman and every birth is different, and there are many things we cannot predict or control.

HypnoBirthing teaches you techniques to help you relax, release tension and cope with the sensations of labour. But attending the course alone is not enough. Like so many things in life, the more you practise, the more familiar and natural the techniques can become. My wish is not to promise you a perfect birth, but to help you feel confident, supported and prepared.

I'm concerned about hypnosis. Is HypnoBirthing safe?

I completely understand! When I first heard about HypnoBirthing, I was sceptical about hypnosis myself. But self-hypnosis in HypnoBirthing has nothing to do with stage hypnosis or losing control. It's about learning to relax deeply while remaining aware of your surroundings. You're not handing over control to someone else.

The techniques are generally considered low-risk, although they may not be suitable for everyone. If you have concerns related to a medical or psychological condition, it's best to discuss them with your healthcare professional.

Will HypnoBirthing help me if I need a C-section?

Absolutely, you can still use many of the techniques! HypnoBirthing isn't just about preparing for a vaginal birth. It's also about understanding your choices, feeling informed and learning how to stay as calm and relaxed as possible.

Breathing, relaxation and visualisation can also be helpful when preparing for a planned caesarean or when birth takes an unexpected turn.

Your medical team will guide you through the clinical decisions, while your HypnoBirthing preparation can help you feel more emotionally prepared.

Does my partner have to attend the classes?

I really encourage birth partners to join! Your partner can play such an important role during pregnancy and birth. In my course, they learn how to support you, help you relax and become an active part of the experience. And believe me, partners often discover just how much they can do!

If your partner cannot attend every session, we can discuss how to make the most of the course together.

I don't have a partner. Can I still join the HypnoBirthing course?

Of course! You don't need to be in a relationship to benefit from HypnoBirthing. Your birth companion can be your mother, sister, friend, doula or anyone you trust and would like to have by your side. And if you're preparing for birth on your own, you're just as welcome.

How does the live online HypnoBirthing course work?

My complete English-speaking HypnoBirthing course consists of five weekly sessions of 2.5 hours, held live via Zoom. I keep my groups small, with a maximum of five couples, so there is plenty of time for questions, personal attention and practising together. You'll also receive access to my Google Classroom, where you can find additional information, exercises and materials to help you prepare between sessions.

And the best part? You can join from the comfort of your own home, whether you're living in the Netherlands or somewhere else in the world.
